Empowering Readers with Books: Roots & Routes: Mapping Identity Across Place and Time
By Melanie D. Koss and Kathleen A. Paciga

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:   This issue’s column invites readers to explore how stories can help young people make sense of where they come from, where they are now, and where they are going. In classrooms today, many students are navigating movement across places, communities, languages, and identities. Movement may happen in big ways or may occur in the quieter shifts of everyday life. Books offer a welcoming space to explore these experiences, to recognize pieces of one’s own story, and to better understand the journeys of others. The titles featured here highlight experiences of migration, relocation, and in-betweenness, alongside the ways young people carry family histories, traditions, and memories into new spaces. Together, these books open the door to thoughtful conversation, connection, and reflection across grade levels. Spanning preprimary/primary, middle-grade, and young adult literature, this collection reminds us that stories can help students feel grounded while also allowing them to imagine where they might belong next.
