Turning Pages to Cross Borders: Cultivating Citizens of the World Through Picturebooks
on Global Citizenship

By Ling Hao and Xiaoying Zhao

Document: Article

Introductory Paragraph:   Individuals need to adapt to their identity as citizens of the world to build connections and navigate challenges in the era of globalization. Picturebooks are effective resources to develop children’s global awareness and critical perspectives, helping children understand their role and place in the global age. Educators need to thoughtfully select and curate picturebooks featuring global citizenship and foster responsible global readers. Drawing on the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) global citizenship education framework, this study examines picturebooks that address a wide range of key topics and issues related to global citizenship. We explored the books’ instructional potential in early childhood and elementary classrooms and aligned them with the Common Core English Language Arts Standards and College, Career, & Civic Life Framework for Social Studies.
