Family Engagement in Literacy: Where Stories Begin: Family Literacies, Identity,
and Representation

By Julie Hoffman and Cindi Koudelka

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  With gratitude and humility, we step into our roles as co-authors of the “Family Engagement in Literacy” column for the Illinois Reading Council Journal. We recognize and acknowledge that we stand on the shoulders of Dr. Laurie Elish-Piper, who wrote this column for over 17 years with heartfelt consistency and relevance. Our dream is to continue her work with the same passion and purpose.  Collectively, we represent 65 years in education, spanning from early childhood through higher education. While we embrace literacy in everything we do, we have also taught math, history, science, STEM, and physical education. Our roles have ranged from classroom teacher and special education teacher to literacy coaching and administration. In addition to this work, we have been actively involved in professional and community organizations that support literacy, inclusivity, and love. Much of our work is not only centered on students but also on families as partners in developing literacy and culturally relevant practices.
