Empowering Readers with Books: Giggles, Gasps, and Great Books
By Melanie D. Koss and Kathleen A. Paciga

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  This month’s column invites readers to pause, breathe, and rediscover the comfort and joy that a well-chosen book can bring, especially in times that feel heavy, uncertain, or simply overwhelming. When the world presses in, literature offers both students and teachers a refuge: a shared laugh, a moment of wonder, or a safe space to feel big emotions without carrying them alone. The books featured here lean into that relief, offering lighthearted fun, surprise, and heart, even as they affirm the power of story to steady us. Not all of these selections feature human main characters, and as a result, this list may look different from the historically diverse collections highlighted in this column. Still, each title offers its own kind of release, through humor, curiosity, or imaginative escape, reminding us that solace can take many forms, and that great books, in one way or another, help us find our way back to joy.
