Unsung Heroes: Annotated Bibliography
By Ayma Siddiqui and Honor Allen

Document: Annotated bibliography

Introductory Paragraph:  Inspiring tales of doing the impossible do not always have to come from fiction. In the past decade, picturebook biographies have become an increasingly popular way to share the true stories of truly amazing (and real) people. This annotated bibliography is a supplement to William Bintz’s article, “Recognizing and Celebrating the Fascinating Lives of People Who Should Be Famous but Aren’t.” In his article, Bintz highlights the picturebook biographies of Eugen Sandow, Jerry Lawson, and Edith Clark and offers teaching tips to support engaged reading. This supplement extends that focus with additional recently published picturebook biographies featuring unsung heroes across science, civics, the arts, and environmental stewardship. The annotations are meant to help teachers choose strong read-alouds that appeal to their students’ interests. We hope the beautiful blend of artistry and storytelling found in these books will encourage the next generation to follow their dreams.
