By Joyce R. Bojko-Jeewek and Heather Eide, Guest Author

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  Techniques! Interventions! Routines! Strategies! Regardless of what we call them, educators have many from which to choose. When deciding on instructional strategies to enhance a lesson plan, remember your English Language Learners (ELLs)! What techniques are helpful for students who need more than a wordy lecture? Developed to assist educators to better understand various challenges ELLs may encounter while learning a new language, this column has covered multiple topics such as the stages of language acquisition, culture, language transfer, Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS), and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). Practical research-based strategies to help aid in making content-rich learning for ELLs easier will be the focus for this issue.
