Finding Common Ground:  Understanding Ourselves and the World Through Literature:  Surviving and Thriving
By Deb Augsburger

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  This last year plus of pandemic life has been difficult for a number of different reasons. We have found ourselves undergoing circumstances and situations we could never have imagined in 2019. With a light at the end of the tunnel-—at least in terms of COVID-19—there has been much discussion of what we have learned from this time and what has brought us joy during this time. And while not everything will be resolved and there will still be sorrows and difficulties, we could not help but reflect on the title of Bettina Love’s (2020) book We Want to Do More than Survive (highly recommended). What does it look like to thrive and find joy and be able to move beyond just survival? What does it mean to live in adversity? These titles tell stories that show joy, that show healing, and that show how so many want to do more than just survive.
