Parent/Teacher Conference: A Dialogue with Dr. Steven Layne

Introductory Paragraph:  Welcome to the first in a series of conversations with experts in the field of literacy about various topics of interest to our IRC members. To start things off, parent and doctoral candidate Erik Parsons spoke with Dr. Steven Layne regarding questions many parents have about early reading.  Dr. Steven Layne currently serves as Professor of Education at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He is a respected international literacy consultant, motivational keynote speaker, and featured author throughout the world, and his work as an educator, researcher, and writer has garnered critical acclaim from a large number of organizations, including USA Today, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the International Literacy Association (ILA), the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the Milken Family Foundation. Author of over 40 books, chapters, articles, and essays, Dr. Layne is a former president of the Illinois Reading Council and a former member of the Board of Directors of the ILA. He is currently working on a professional book on the history of literary genres for children and young adults as well as a new young adult novel. He has been married for over 30 years to his wife, Debbie, who is an elementary school principal. The Laynes have four children who are dearly loved and one adorable collie who sometimes misbehaves.
