Introductory Paragraph:  Welcome to the first in a series of informative interviews with seminal researchers and practitioners in the field of literacy conducted by IRC Past-President Dr. Steven Layne. For the inaugural column, Steven spoke with former ILA President Dr. Vicki Risko, professor emerita from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Risko is well known for her commitment to and work in the educational arena but particularly in teacher education. She taught in the Language, Literacy, and Culture Specialization program at Vanderbilt for over 37 years and continues with her professional work today—consulting with school districts, speaking at national and international conferences, and writing academically.
