Building an Expressive Vocabulary: The Impact of the Comprehensive Vocabulary Framework
By Stacey Savage and Rachel Smith

Document: Article

Introductory Paragraph:  “What does "insert any word here* mean?” This is a question that we hear all too often as educators. Students frequently struggle to find ways other than looking in the dictionary or asking an adult for the meaning of unknown words. The purpose of our study was to show how the Comprehensive Vocabulary Framework (CVF) can help support students to learn strategies to increase the use of unknown words in their expressive vocabularies. Students were taught a variety of vocabulary acquisition strategies through picture books and mini-lessons. The growth and usage of these strategies were measured through a pre- and post-test, as well as weekly reflections. Results from this study showed that students benefited from the implementation of the CVF by being able to identify and use unknown words in their expressive vocabularies. Furthermore, teaching students a variety of vocabulary strategies can be a useful tool for students of any age, grade level, or content area.
