Family Engagement in Literacy: Education Is About Learning: Let’s Learn About Our Students and Their Cultures

By Darius Jackson, Guest Author

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  Each year, the climate of schools changes, and there are new theories and ideas to help enhance the academic setting. Reflecting on the 2019-2020 school year and reviewing our current school year of 2020-2021, we are currently living in an academic war zone. Most educators were not prepared to teach virtually, nor were our students and families, across the world, ready to learn virtually. Due to the pandemic of COVID-19, we have been forced to teach, learn, and live in a new world.  In a previous column, Natalie Young (2021), the guest author, discussed the importance of educators examining themselves and their classrooms for a sense of belonging and acceptance for students and their families. In this column, I want to extend on that idea and include the concepts of Culturally Responsive Teaching and Funds of Knowledge from the student and family perspectives, particularly focusing on the sense of belonging and interest for students.
