Professional Development: Teaching with Confidence in Uncertain Times
By Sophie Degener, Adelfio Garcia, Ryan McCarty, and Ivy Sitkoski

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  We wrote this set of reviews in the middle of an incredibly wrought holiday season. COVID-19 numbers reach a new high every day, restrictions that had been relaxed are tightening up again in many places, and many schools that were open or using a hybrid model have gone back to remote learning. By the time you read this column, things will hopefully be better, but we just don’t know. In an uncertain time, we are offering you a selection of books that deals with a variety of current topics of rock-solid importance, no matter what is happening. One book examines the complex considerations involved in teaching early childhood dual language learners using research-based methods. Another probes the possibilities of using graphic novels for the same curricular purposes as traditional novels and nonfiction books across the content areas in high school. Still another book advocates for the rights of all elementary school children to literacy education that honors diversity and authenticity. And just in case some of us are still in remote settings, the fourth book provides guidelines and tools for adapting highly effective teaching practices for digital environments. These books will excite and inspire you, and make you very glad that, fortunately, books are among the things we haven’t had to give up during the pandemic.
