Finding Common Ground: Understanding Ourselves and the World Through Literature:
What Books Spark Joy?

By Jung Kim and Deborah Augsburger

Document: Column

Introductory Paragraph:  We are writing this column before the winter solstice when the days are getting darker and the pandemic continues to rage on. However, the solstice marks the lengthening of the day and more light in our lives, and a vaccine is beginning to roll out around the world. To this end, we offer up a column that is about joy, whether it is pure, unadulterated joy or the joy that comes after overcoming obstacles and hardships. From #BlackGirlMagic to “happily ever after,” and even the idea that joy is a form of resistance, we bring you books that spark delight; remind us the world can be good; and ignite hope, love, and laughter. There are so many joyful reasons to read and joyous results from reading, we hope you and your students find some here.
