August 5, 2014: Southern Illinois Reading Council will host a Summer Mini Conference, Harvesting the Fruits of Literacy, from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm at the Carbondale Civic Center, 200 S. Illinois Avenue, Carbondale, Illinois. The keynote address: Increasing Reading Comprehension Through Active Engagement Mini-Lessons by Patricia Tylka. Registration before July 25th will be $15 for SIRC/IRC members, $20 for non-members, and $5 for Preservice Teachers. After July 25th, registration will be $5 more at the door. Earn Clock Hours!
September 8, 2014: International Literacy Day is observed annually to focus attention on worldwide literacy needs. Plan now a special way to observe this day and explore ways to work with other organizations such as your local reading council, rotary club, school, or library. September 9, 2014: Illini Reading Councilwill host the 2nd Annual Meet and Greet Book Tasting from 4:00-6:00 pm at Art Mart, 127 Lincoln Square Mall, Urbana, Illinois. Please Illini members for a stress free after school event to network with coworkers and other local teachers. Bert Crossland from Crossland Literacy will join us for to talk about professional books from Heinemann, BookSource, and Okapi.
September 13, 2014: West Suburban Reading Counciland Concordia University Chicago will host the 39th Reading Conference, Planting the Seeds of Global Literacy, from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm at Concordia University Chicago, 7400 Augusta Street, River Forest, Illinois. September 15, 2014: Illinois Title I Association (ITA) is accepting applications for the ITA Grant Program which will award financial grants to members of ITA for innovative programs and projects. The guidelines and application process is available online.

On Saturday, November 15th, the 38th Day of Reading will be held. Breakfast and Lunch are included in registration fee. Before November 5th, the cost to register is $145 for SRL members. May 1, 2015: MID-State Reading Councilis accepting applications for the Carol Berry Memorial Grant to award a financial grant up to $1,000 to individual council members for the purpose of promoting the literacy of children in the classroom. The guidelines, review process, and submission are available online. The notification and award date is May 15, 2015.
July 1, 2014: Northern Illinois Reading Councilis accepting applications for the NIRC Literacy Project Award and NIRC Library Launch Award. The NIRC Literacy Project Award will be granted to an NIRC member to develop an innovative and exciting literacy project in a school or classroom. The NIRC Library Launch Award is attended to award $250 to a new classroom teacher to be used to purchase new books for a classroom. Awards will be given at the NIRC Fall Conference.
